Blog Post 6- Responding and Reflecting #2 (Lolita Only)

Lolita
At this point, I am am done with the book. I thought the book was pretty interesting and had a good story to it. However, I did not like how descriptive the book was, and can understand why parents do not want their kids reading such a book. There have been many events that have happened since we last left off.

First, Lolita (Delores) does in fact have feelings for Humbert Humbert. When she leaves for a summer camp, her mom, Mrs. Haze, finds out that Humbert Humbert loves her daughter. When she goes to report it to the police, she ends up being run over. Humbert then gets Lolita and tells her that her mom died. He wants to have sex with Lolita, and tries to drug her. However, the drugs are not strong. In the morning, Lolita ends up sleeping with Humbert Humbert and admits that she had an experience at the Summer camp. He knows that she does not love him the way he loves her. He threatens Lolita from telling the police by saying if he is arrested she will be taken to some place and will lose all of her belongings. He also bribes her with food, money, and fun events to have sex with her. They end up living in New England and she is in an all girls school because Humbert does not want he to be with other boys. The townspeople think that he is a great father.

Lolita wants to be in a school play and asks Humbert to let her join. The writer of the play if Mr. Clare Quilty, he will be an important person later on. Before the first showing, Lolita and Humbert start to have an argument and she runs away. He later finds her leaving the phone booth and she tells him that she made a decision. She has decided to skip the play and ravel with Humbert like they used to.

Lolita falls ill and Humbert takes her to the hospital. Later in the hospital she escapes with her “uncle”. Humbert starts to look everywhere for her, but after sometime gives up and has another relationship who does not know about his past. Lolita sends a letter to Humbert saying that she is pregnant, married, and needs money, When Humbert visits her, she tells him that Quilty checked her out of the hospital after following them. He wanted Lolita to be in an adult movie, but she refused and was thrown out. She met her husband, but he does not know about her past. After pleading with Lolita to leave her husband, and even though she does not, Humbert gives her the money.

He goes off and tries to find Quilty in hopes of killing him. He ends up shooting him in the head, but on the drive back home is arrested for driving on the wrong side of the road. He also becomes very ill and asks for his novel on his life to be published after he and Lolita die. A few months after he dies, Lolita ends up dying in childbirth while giving birth to a stillborn child.

I personally do not know anyone like this. However, one of my friends grandparents died minutes apart together. This novel reminded me of them as Lolita and Humbert died close within a few months and they were a couple.
