Blog Post #1- Psychoanalytical Lenses: Why I'm Interested
For this project, I decided to focus on the psychoanalytic lens. This lens interests me because it deals with getting into the head of the character as well as the author and determining any similarities or differences between the two. It will be interesting to see if the authors beliefs and values show up in the way the characters talks or acts towards certain situations. Although I will be reading through the psychoanalytic lens, the feminist lens was another lens I considered for this project. The role of women has dramatically changed throughout history and it would be cool seeing it play out in the stories we read. What I am hoping to get out of this literature project is that I will be able to discover the differences between the two books on how the authors portrayed themselves through the characters while also enjoying the stories.
Blog Entry #1: My Critical Lens
I chose to pick the feminist critical lens because I have always found it interesting to see how gender roles can have a major impact on the characters in a novel. This particular lens interested me more than the others because I have always enjoyed viewing the interactions and relationships between characters in a novel based on their gender roles. My previous experience with the topic of gender roles was when I read the play Othello. This play deals with many different and significant gender roles that cause conflict and regret for many of the characters. My personal beliefs on the topic of gender roles are that it is not always a good thing for one gender to dominate over another and for one gender to cause conflict for a character or two in a novel. Another lens I originally considered doing was the psychoanalytical lens. The reason I was originally going to do this lens was because it seemed interesting to determine the hidden desires and motivations of different characters. By the end of this blogging experience, I hope to have a better understanding of the feminist lens and how it can affect people in the world for either the better or the worse.
Reader Response
What I chose for my selective lens was reader response, I chose this response because I thought it would be interesting to reflect on my reactions to the book. It is also a way to generalize my opinions instead of feeling a certain way ,in a certain section of the book . Humbert is the main protagonist and he seems to fall in love with a 12 year old. This is oblivious wrong but in the way the reviews on this book are worded. It looks like what Humbert had for Lolita was beautiful . I am going to find out for myself but i am really interested in how im going to react to this type of romance. Im not used to accepting relationships between older people and kids. I think once exploring this book I would be given answers to all the crazy questions about how that was acceptable to Humbert. I think it would be hard to convince me that this type of behavior would be acceptable , but im hoping this book can give me a broad picture of real love if it even exists. Im exited to be able to read this book , i dont know what to expect? Better start reading .
Blog Post #1- Critical Lens and Why
The reason I chose the Psychoanalytical lens for this project is because I have a deep interest in psychology. I have taken several courses about psychology, and in that time I have studied psychoanalytic theory a few different times. I find the theory originally created by Sigmund Freud to be very interesting, as it gives a good idea as to why a person behaves a certain way, which I find incredibly fascinating. Therefore, I found it would be natural for me to choose this lens for the project, when I already usually look at literature through this lens anyway. On top of this, the project has given me an opportunity to go even more in depth into the theory and focus on a few different subjects: the characters and author of Lolita. Throughout my reading of the book, I will be focusing on the actions and interactions of the characters, and what it means for them to make certain decisions. Moreover, I will also be looking into the choices made by the author, Vladimir Novakof, and what it means for him to choose certain aspects of the book. By the end of my experience, I hope to come to a better understanding of the human animal from reading Lolita and analyzing its characters.
