Blog Post 4- Close Reading 2

Lolita
I found a quote that explains why Humbert Humbert likes young and small girls, “...four months later she died of Typhus...and that little girl with her seaside limbs and ardent tongue haunted me ever since-until at last, twenty-four years later I broke her spell by incarnating her in another.” (13 and 15).  It shows that his girlfriend Annabel died when he was young. He also mentions that “twenty-four years later I broke her spell by incarnating her in another.” The new girl is Lolita. He sees Annabel in Lolita and it makes him attracted to her. He believes that he finally found Annabel. Although it is very creepy, it does explain why he likes young girls, mostly Lolita. Where I am at in the book, I know that Lolita and Humbert Humbert have an relationship. This book makes me wonder if this is how the author actually felt.

The Scarlet Letter
“‘ Here, woman! The child is yours,- she is none of mine,- neither will she recognize my voice or aspect as a father’s...Recognize me not, by word, by sign, by look! Breathe not the secret, above all, to the man thou wottest of. Shouldst thou fail me in this.’” (66 and 69). This is being said by Roger Chillingworth who is Hester Prynne’s lost husband.  He visits her and the child as a physician, it is shown that he was the lost husband. He also wants to know who the father of the child is to take revenge. I think that he wants to take revenge as he is mad that his wife was having an affair and like any spouse, reacts harshly. He tells her that if she tells anyone that he is her husband, he will destroy the baby’s father. I think he also changes his identity as he doesn't want the townspeople to know who he really is because he might be punished for hiding. He thinks that by being identified, he will get in a lot of trouble. He believes that it wasn’t his fault Hester had a kid and should not be in trouble for it.

I think that the townspeople will eventually find out who the baby’s father is. I also think that they will find out that Roger Chillingworth is actually Hester Prynne’s lost husband. When they find out, Roger Chillingworth, will somehow find out who the father of his wife’s child is, and kill him. I also think that Hester Prynne will get a few people to support her.
